CIPD announces next chief executive

The CIPD has announced the appointment of Neil Carberry as its next chief executive. He will take up the role on 28 September 2026.

Carberry joins from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), where he has been chief executive since 2018. He previously led the CBI’s work on labour market, skills and employment relations, and brings more than 25 years’ experience across the HR and employment field. He is currently chair of the CBI’s Trade Association Council and has held a number of public roles, including serving on the Council of ACAS and as a member of the Low Pay Commission. He was awarded an OBE in 2025 for services to business and the economy.

Commenting on the appointment, CIPD chair Professor Chris Bones said: “We are entering a new era of work. Technology, and particularly AI, is driving the most significant transformation in work since the industrial age. This demands new thinking, new approaches and new leadership to improve organisational productivity and performance through better people management.

“Neil brings a wealth of experience as a CEO in both the HR and membership sectors, alongside deep expertise in public policy and strong relationships across business and government. His insight into the future of work makes him well placed to lead the CIPD into its next chapter."

Carberry's appointment follows Peter Cheese’s retirement after 14 years as CIPD chief executive.
